Fontfroide Abbey

It is one of the miracles that the Corbières try to keep secret. On the edge of a small road bordered by the garrigue and Cyprus trees is hidden one of the most beautiful Cistercian abbeys in France,

Fontfroide is the entry door into Cathar Country. It is almost impossible to fully understand the crusade of The Albi without visiting this fantastic cultural site situated just outside Narbonne.

The construction of the abbey in the beautiful pink and ochre colours of the Corbières stone makes this one or the purest masterpieces of Cistercian art. Not to mention the impressive cloisters and chapels or the old vegetable garden which now is home to more than 3,000 varieties of rose.

Open all year round, the abbey is well worth a visit. Tours last about one hour and can be organised in English with some advance notice.
